Securing a World of Physically Capable Computers

Computer security is no longer about data; it’s about life and property. This change makes an enormous difference, and will shake up our industry in many ways. First, data authentication and integrity will become more important than confidentiality. And second, our largely regulation-free Internet will become a thing of the past. Soon we will no longer have a choice between government regulation and no government regulation. Our choice is between smart government regulation and stupid government regulation. Given this future, it’s vital that we look back at what we’ve learned from past attempts to secure these systems, and forward at what technologies, laws, regulations, economic incentives, and social norms we need to secure them in the future.

Bruce Schneier is an internationally renowned security technologist, called a security guru by the Economist. He is the author of 14 books — including the New York Times best-seller Click Here to Kill Everybody — as well as hundreds of articles, essays, and academic papers. His influential newsletter Crypto-Gram and blog Schneier on Security are read by over 250,000 people. Schneier is a fellow at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University; a Lecturer in Public Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School; a board member of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, AccessNow, and the Tor Project; and an advisory board member of EPIC and VerifiedVoting.org.

    In 2016, the Government launched its Cyber Security Strategy to develop a national programme to nurture the cyber security sector and protect Britain’s people and infrastructure from cyber threats. This year, the Network and Information Systems Directive (NISD) came into effect, placing additional requirements on organisations across the private, public and non-profit sectors to ensure their cyber awareness and resilience.

    The 2017 WannaCry attack demonstrated the devastating impact of new cyber threats to the public sector. The National Cyber Security Centre has thwarted over 800 cyber attacks against public sector organisations, whilst the Government has invested £1.9bn in cyber security. Even so, more than four in ten of all UK businesses and two in ten charities suffered a cyber breach or attack last year, costing the UK economy £27bn. Subsequently, more than three quarters of businesses and charities have identified cyber security as a high priority. In response, the Government has sought to expand the pool of cyber professionals and skill the workforce through the Cyber Skills Immediate Impact Fund and the CyberFirst initiative.

    This event provides attendees with an invaluable opportunity to hear the latest policy updates and initiatives from senior policymakers designed to enhance cyber security across government, industry and society. Participants will have the opportunity to listen to best-practice case studies from across the cyber security sector demonstrating successfully proven approaches to reducing risk, skilling staff and enhancing defence.

    KTN is running a collaborators' workshop on 26 September 2019 in London to explain more about the Digital Security by Design Challenge announced by the government.

    The Digital Security by Design challenge has been recently announced by the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS). This challenge, amounting to £70 million of government funding over 5 years, will be delivered by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) through the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund (ISCF).

    This Collaborators' Workshop will provide an opportunity to hear more details of the challenge and forthcoming competitions. There will also be an opportunity for delegates to present and discuss potential collaborations.

    SASIG are delighted to present a trilogy of events this October on cybercrime. We start the week off with a workshop that looks at the UK’s growing and evolving capability to counter cybercrime at the national, regional and local levels. The fundamental nature of criminality in the digital age is changing in an unprecedented way. Criminal activity is constantly morphing and becoming ever-more sophisticated. At the same time, the risk of detection and prosecution remains low because of the complex legal international environment and because cyber law enforcement around the world is still immature, under-resourced and reactive.

    UK law enforcement efforts to combat cybercrime are the "most joined-up bit of policing" in the country, but police forces cannot do it alone. Kindly hosted by Unilever at their prestigious London Headquarters, this will be an opportunity for the players from all parts of the fight against cybercrime to gather and review progress.

    Later in this fascinating week, we will explore in more detail the challenges that corporations face in improving the digital landscape for our children, in conjunction with the NSPCC. We will also be holding a masterclass on the essential procedures of digital forensics for the cybersecurity practitioner, with some of the UK's leading forensic science experts and practitioners.     At the second workshop in this fascinating series, the SASIG will be looking further into the development and growth of artificial intelligence (AI) as demonstrated by machines. Devices increasingly perceive their environment and take actions that maximise their chance of successfully achieving their goals, including learning and problem-solving.

    SASIG members will gain a better understanding of the current and potential capabilities of AI and - when combined with IoT, machine learning and anomaly detection - how these emerging technologies will come to affect their business models and processes.
